NHL Project Information

Did you know that math is a big part of the game of hockey? In fact, without math, hockey simply couldn't be played. We are going to discover as many different types of math as we can in the game of hockey! Over the course of the year, you will be completing a lot of activities! Some of these activities will last all year and some will only last for a few weeks! Check in here often to keep up with your project requirements!

Some cool things you should know about hockey are listed below:

1) Every NHL hockey team dreams of winning the Stanley Cup. It's like winning the SuperBowl! Click on the player below to learn more about the history of hockey and the Stanley Cup.

2) When a team wins a game in hockey, they earn 2 points. If two teams tie, each team wins 1 point and a 5-minute overtime period is played. If no one scores during the 5-minute overtime period, the teams have a shootout! The team who scores the most goals during a shootout wins! When they win, they earn another point. The teams with the most points at the end of the regular season advance to the finals and compete for the Stanley Cup.

Project Assignments

Every student was randomly assigned a hockey team. Each student was given a form to keep track of their teams playing schedule and their wins and losses. Students were taught how to calculate their teams winning percentage. After each game, the students are to record their teams wins and losses by going to ESPN or NHL and recording the results. Students have been taught how to find their individual teams at either of these sites.

How to calculate your team's winning percentage

1) Write the word fraction for the two things that are being compared, in this case, wins to total games.

2) Set up a proportion: wins/total = x/100

3) Cross multiply and divide.

4) The result will be winning percentage.
